Meet Tristan. He is a second year Apprentice Fitter and Turner at Aurizon’s Callemondah Locomotive Depot in Gladstone, Queensland.
Tristan joined Aurizon in mid-2015 after working as a Trade Assistant within the construction, manufacturing, mining and quarrying industries.
“After working as a Trade Assistant, I was interested in taking the next step in my career by gaining a formal trade qualification so I applied for an apprenticeship opportunity at Aurizon and haven’t looked back since,” Tristan said.
Learning from a variety of skilled tradespeople at the depot, Tristan undertakes routine inspections, maintenance and repairs on diesel and electric locomotives in his daily role. He considers himself a “hands-on person” and is passionate about a career in maintenance, fabrication and repairs.
Tristan enjoys working closely with the other trade staff at Callemondah who mentor the apprentices by sharing knowledge about their trade — whether it be the fitters, toolmakers, boilermakers or motor mechanics.
“My colleagues are always willing to go out of their way to demonstrate how tasks are done so that apprentices like myself understand the process and can confidently and safely replicate it,” he said.
“I wake up and look forward to going to work almost every day, which is something that not many people can say.”
Tristan is a proud indigenous man and appreciates being part of a diverse workplace, where his culture is readily accepted and celebrated.
“At Aurizon, my indigenous heritage is respected and actively promoted through the Company’s Reconciliation Action Plan and indigenous celebrations such as NAIDOC and Reconciliation week. It makes me proud to work for a Company who create a safe and respectful workplace for employees no matter what cultural background they are from.”
