Aurizon’s Coal business provides a critical service to Australia’s $60 billion1 export coal industry; the nation’s second largest source of export revenue in 2018 financial year.

As a supply chain partner for our customers, we transport approximately 200 million tonnes of metallurgical and thermal coal annually, which accounts for around half of Australia’s export coal tonnages. Our trains carry coal from basins in Queensland and New South Wales bound for export to global markets including India, China, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan.

More than 10% of the coal we haul is for domestic use, contributing to Australia’s energy generation.

Growing with our customers

In Central Queensland, our trains transport more than 150 million tonnes of customers’ coal to five export terminals.

We are also proud to provide coal haulage services for customers who supply both domestic and international markets along Queensland’s South-West Corridor.

In 2005, we brought our heavy haul coal expertise to the competitive coal supply chain of the Hunter Valley in New South Wales where we hauled 180,000 tonnes in our first year. In the 2018 financial year, we transported more than 52 million tonnes in the region, making us the fastest growing coal haulage company in the New South Wales.

To support our growth in this market, we have invested more than half a billion dollars in rail facilities and rollingstock since 2005.

Regardless of where we operate, we are committed to working with our customers to provide safe and efficient rail services that will support the growth of Australia’s second largest export.

Delivering value for our customers

We bring capability, technological innovation and our coal haulage experience of more than 50 years to our customers each day to support the safe and efficient delivery of coal to markets in Australia and internationally.

Our Coal business employs more than 1,800 people, with more than 98% of these employees living and working in regional communities in Queensland and New South Wales.

Aurizon has the largest fleet of coal-hauling locomotives and wagons in Australia, with more than 300 locomotives and 8,500 coal wagons. We continue to make major investments in technology solutions to drive productivity and efficiencies, while delivering safety and environmental benefits. This investment, together with the experience and capability of our employees, has contributed to 19% reduction in Greenhouse Gas emissions intensity since 20102.

Our fleet provides the flexibility required to meet fluctuating demand in addition to being suitably agile to respond to the expected growth of our existing and future customers.
