This is Ryan. He is Aurizon’s Mechanical Apprentice of the year. As a kid, Ryan was fascinated by steam locomotives and heritage trains. He now works for Aurizon and was recently named the Mechanical Apprentice of the Year - a dream come true for this train enthusiast.
Ever since he was a kid, Ryan was fascinated by steam trains and heritage diesel trains. As a student he would volunteer to work on restoring steam locomotives and heritage diesels on weekends, which he still does in his spare time.
Ryan finally had the chance to put his hobby to good use when he started his apprenticeship in January 2013 as a Fitter and Turner at Aurizon's Redbank railway workshops.
At Aurizon, he has had the opportunity to work across Queensland in places like Gladstone and Mackay on state-of-the-art machinery like rail grinding machines - used to keep the rail network in top condition.
At Redbank, Ryan rotated through the different areas; bogies, brakes, engines, machine, locomotives and traction shops to gain an insight into what it takes to maintain Aurizon's locomotive fleet.
The best part about his current role has been working with an exceptional team of people every day and learning from their vast knowledge and experience.
Ryan has enjoyed the opportunities provided by Aurizon and values the experience he has gained working for such a large company.
He was very humbled to win the 2015 Mechanical Apprentice of the Year at the Aurizon Excellence Awards.
