Aurizon has condemned protesters in the Hunter Valley after they blocked a moving Hunter Valley coal train putting their lives at risk and traumatising the train drivers.
On the weekend a group of approximately 20 protesters illegally entered the rail corridor and stopped a train from entering the Koorangang Island coal terminal.
Aurizon’s General Manager Service Delivery NSW, Stephen Richards said the reckless behaviour could have resulted in a fatality.
“This irresponsible stunt not only put the protesters at risk but risked the safety of our drivers who were just doing their job.
“These people just have no concept of what it takes to bring to a halt a 9,000 tonne coal train travelling at 30 kilometres an hour.
“Day in and day out our drivers have to deal with foolish behaviour.
“The trauma suffered by our train drivers following incidents like this should not be underestimated. They are offered counselling and ongoing support by the Company.”
Aurizon Vice President Safety, Health and Environment, Neil Backer said it was grossly irresponsible for the group to protest on the train tracks.
"Everyone has a right to express their opinion but no one has the right to put people’s health and safety deliberately at risk.
"Whatever the protesters’ beliefs, they show scant regard for the health and safety of employees simply performing their duties.”
