Alex Kummant, originally from the USA has a long family history in rail and love of big stuff. When we caught up with him he explained how passion and courage are the driving force behind Aurizon’s transformation.
Alex had been associated with rail since his childhood. He grew up around his father's steel plant and
ended up working a summer job at US Steel, on a short line, as part of a track crew. Alex brings to
Aurizon a wealth of experience having held executive positions for leading rail operators in America.
Alex and his wife together with his daughter and two dogs have relocated to Australia where he is now
kept busy thinking about what Aurizon will look like after 2020.
What attracted you to the Industry?
I came out of business school and was sitting on the West Coast basically on the dawn of the internet
explosion and decided to go back to Ohio to work in the industry. Glueing together computers and
pretending to be a technologist and not a marketing guy didn't appeal to me. Railroads I guess has
always stayed with me.
