The completion of the $170m Bauhinia Electrification Project in December 2014 has allowed new electric locomotive trains to operate on this part of the rail network. It follows the completion of the power system upgrades across the Blackwater System in 2012 which doubled its electrical capacity to allow more efficient electric locomotives to run on the network.
The project involved significant onsite civil and construction works to electrify the line to support current and future customers by harnessing the operational and cost benefits of electric trains. It supports Aurizon’s long-term coal haulage contract with Glencore as it expands the Rolleston Mine to cater for increased output volumes in future years.
Innovative safety features of the project:
- The design, build and transfer of a more energy efficient Ergon 132kV substation
- New solar powered level crossings
- Remote equipment powered through traction wiring or solar power to eliminate the use of electrical connections
- A new Static Frequency Converter, the first power system of its kind to be used in Australia
- On-site CCTV to remotely monitor site conditions and electrical isolator status
- On-site GSM cell station to allow direct uplink for mobile phone coverage
- Use of helicopters for lifting and placing overhead masts and wiring runs to save time
