Aurizon has solid foundations established from more than 147 years of rail freight industry experience. This legacy and the geographic scope of our expanding operations closely connects us with the long term sustainability of the environment.

Aurizon’s Environmental Policy sets out our broad objectives for continual improvement in environmental performance. These objectives include:

• Energy efficiency
• Greenhouse gas reduction
• Prevention of pollution
• Minimisation of waste
• Natural systems and resource protection
• Noise and dust management

We are committed to setting environmental objectives, reviewing progress, and reporting results.

The pursuit of these objectives helps us to both meet the commercial needs of customers and maintain the confidence of the community. For example, our intermodal rail service can transport one tonne of freight 150 kilometres by rail on just one litre of fuel, this is up to four times more energy efficient than road.

Aurizon is also working closely with its supply chain partners to manage the impacts of coal dust. In Central Queensland, a Coal Dust Management Plan has been established and will implement a number of coal dust mitigation methods. A similar program is being developed on the South West System in Queensland.
